Importance of Windshield Washer Fluid
I walked into an auto parts store last week and asked where the “blue water” was. The counterman quickly directed me to the correct isle and there it was.
What in the world am I talking about, “blue water”? I just did a google search for the term “blue water” and came up with several links; none of which were even remotely related to an auto parts store item. Yet, the counterman knew exactly what I needed and where to direct me to find it.
The mystery fluid to which I refer is windshield washer fluid! Did you guess it?
Having a full bottle of windshield washer fluid is essential for winter time driving. Many of us have experienced zero visibility when passing a large truck and getting splashed. It really lowers the blood pressure when the washers and wipers clear the muddy mess from your windshield.
However, not all washer fluid is good for winter time usage.
The freezing point varies from season to season, and we have to be mindful of the freezing point of our windshield washer fluid.
Some department stores reduce the price of summer fluid as winter approaches but buyer beware, this stuff may freeze at thirty- two degrees and break the plastic plumbing for your washers. Wintertime washer fluid is good for much lower temperatures.
I selected blue water with a -20 degree freezing point. That should be plenty good for me and my car. If it should get colder than that my car won’t start – only because I’m too chicken to go outside and turn the key.
So, as you have maintenance performed on your car, make sure that all fluids are compatible with super cold weather and fill your fuel tank often. If you get stuck in a snow drift at least you’ll have fuel to keep the heater going and washer fluid to enjoy the scenery.
