5 Tips for Maintaining Your Car this Winter

There’s no denying that winter takes its toll on your car. From road salt damage to frozen fuel lines to low tire pressure, it’s important to take proactive steps to protect your car.
1. Swap out your normal tires for a winter model
Living in an area where the temperatures regularly fall below 45 degrees means you’ll want to buy some winter tires. This type of tire gives you better traction while turning and stopping on the cold pavement.
2. Check your tire pressure weekly
Drive on under inflated tires causes them to wear down prematurely and lose traction when driving on slippery or icy surfaces. Your tires lose pressure with every drop in temperature.
3. Keep your fuel tank half full
During winter weather, make sure to keep half a tank of fuel in your vehicle in case of an emergency or if you get stuck in the snow and are waiting to be rescued. For longer road trips, make sure to plan for gas in advance.
4. Add a protective layer
A coat of polymer wax creates a barrier against road salt, grime, snow, sleet, and more. Mix that with high-pressure car washes after winter storms to rinse away buildup in areas that are harder to reach.
5. Protect your windshield wipers
If you park outdoors, leave the wipers up to keep them from freezing to the windshield. Don’t use your wiper blades to remove ice, snow, and frost from the windshield. Invest in an ice scraper.

No matter what winter throws at you, make sure to keep these essentials in your car:
Clothing. Keep hats, gloves, scarves, hand and foot warmers, blankets, and thick socks.
Stay connected. Add a flashlight with batteries to the kit. You might also consider flares or a whistle, as well as an extra phone charger.
Stay healthy. Keep bottled water and snacks, as well as any medications and a first-aid kit.
Other necessities. Jumper cables are a must have for your kit, as well as a small camping shovel and an ice scraper.
