What Air Filter is Best?

When choosing an air filter for your home, the first step is to identify what size filter you need. The easiest way to do this is to look at the edges of the old filter when it is removed. Most filters have the dimensions printed on the edges. A common size that may be shown on a filter would be 14inx24inx1in. If however, the old filter is not present when installing a new one, you would need to measure the space that the old filter occupied.
Now you should consider the level of filtration that best suits your family. For example, if anyone in your home suffers from Asthma, it may be advisable to purchase a higher quality filter. The higher quality filters catch larger particles like lint, dust mites and pet dander, as well as smaller particles like bacteria and mold spores – common irritants to people with Asthma and allergies. If there is no particular need for the highest quality filter, a mid-grade filter that is designed to catch large to medium sized particulates such as household dust, dust mites, lint, pollen and pet dander will do.
If you choose to use a lower quality filter, but want better performance from it, spray the new filter with furniture polish before installing it. Furniture polish attracts dust, therefore making the filter more efficient and your house will smell lemony fresh!
